On April 26th, 2019, Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen and Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen will arrive to Plymouth Elementary to discuss their work with students. Their visit was made possible through a Title I grant the school received, along with a small contribution from Plymouth Elementary PTO.

Gijsbert is the illustrator of Michigan’s Official State Children’s Book, The Legend of Sleeping Bear, as well as the winner of the Great Lakes Children’s Book Award for The Legend of Mackinac Island. The author/illustrator duo have also collaborated on the The Hazel Ridge Farm series, which includes Adopted by an Owl and I Love You Just Enough. The books are true stories about their wildlife sanctuary and 25 years of wildlife rehabilitation in Michigan. You can learn more about their books and farm at their website,

During their visit, Gijsbert will do a step-by-step drawing with students and discuss how children’s books are made. Robbyn will share stories, talk about her writing process and nature journaling.

Autographed books are available to purchase. Please fill out the form which arrived home before Spring Break and return it to your child’s teacher by April 10th. If you have lost the form, a copy may be downloaded at the link here.
